HONG KONG - KING KONG 2013 - PART II

Ho Ho Ho...

Yes, I know.

I have again disappeared for a LONG LONG TIME... till the cows come home so some will say.

However, I do think I have a valid excuse for doing so, as you see, we will soon have a new addition in the family and IT or "AT" being our FIRST.

Everything has to be PREFECT, don't believe me ?

Just ask any MAN who is to be a first time DAD, and he will tell you the sort of standards the MUMMY is expecting is shocking.

Just imagine, for beginners, I have to GOOGLE all the available strollers in the market and then go for numerous comparison and on-site survey before shortlisting it to the final 3 and then do a pros and cons evaluation before spending a handsome sum up to four figures excluding the decimal point.

Don't blink !!!

It's nothing but the TRUTH.

I LIE YOU NOT.

But anyone who knows me enough, will tell you that I enjoy pain... lots of pain and this was painful I must confess.

By the way, AT = Asher Tan, whereas I was more inclined to go for a manly men name, the wifey wanted it to be somewhat softer just in case, he has a temper and a fuse like daddy.

I reckon it was for the good of the child, so of course, I agreed.

Don't you know, no men should every argue with the WIFEY, if you want to live in peace and see the sun shine again.

So boy, I am saying this on record and if you ever complain that your name sounds a little soft, it was 100% MUMMY idea, nothing to do with Dad.

FYI, I would have gone with ABLE or ANDER instead, but MUMMY wins, most of the time anyway.

Okay, back to part II of Hong Kong.

Some of my readers has feedback that I did not provide the full address in part I, so here I am presenting to 2 solutions to you.

Solution 1: We have a technology called Google, you lazy ASS.

Solution 2: Refer to Solution 1 for answer.

So how does Hong Kong looks like at 8 am on a weekday, some of you may wonder.

8 am and the street are relatively empty
 Until, we saw this.

A queue and it is not a short one, mind you and of course, being a Singaporean, when we see a queue, what do we do ?

We join in of course, even if the queue eventually lead up to a toliet 8O

Thankfully, this did not lead up to a Toilet but a restaurant called Australia Daisy Co.

So will we find Australia cows instead or better will we have Australia mei mei (Loosely translated as Australia Girls) serving us.

No such luck buddy.

However, if you are hungry, you will find this.

However, if this is not your ideal breakfast, you can opt for their alternative breakfast set.

Although, we were not that hungry to begin with, but after a long queue, we also opt to order everything else on their breakfast menu, so presenting you with bread + egg served in 2 different style.

Talking about eggs, have you ever wonder if there is any thing else in this world that can have so many transformation and variety to suits your mood and appetite, not forgetting that the eggs are also as a sub and not often the main attraction.

I saluted the EGG.

But like in the movies, if a cafe is good, you will see a full house, and don't act too surprise if you are asked to share a seat, but be local and act local is key here.

After a good breakfast and shopping, missy ask if I wanted to go Starbuck for coffee and promised it to be a different experience like no other.

So being a trusty husband, of course, I will listen to Missy.

Not far from the main shopping street, after a 10 minutes walk, we arrived at Sai Yee Street.

Initially, my first thoughts was that I got conned "again" by Missy who has other purpose, but hold and behold, it is located on level 2 of the shop houses so prefer to work those legs because you won't find an escalator or life.

Nothing outside will suggest that you find a retro Star buck cafe on level 2, but like in Singapore, property in Hong Kong is expensive and an endless gold mine if you own a small plot of land.

At the entrance you will be greeted by this sign, don't asked me what it stands for, because my ability to read Chinese can't save me even if I try.

But look closer and you will see that this sign is made out of mahjong tiles for a STAR BUCK cafe, how local can you be.

Beside, did you know for a fact that mahjong is Hong Konger favourite past time, or it used to be till the invention of iPad or any other electronic device.

Once you made your way to level 2, you will see that the interior is colorful decorated like no other Star Buck that I ever been to.

I was pleasantly surprised, as I would have thought Star Buck will have their cafe done up according to their corporate standard, but apparently, if you have a creative idea, they will allow you to do what you do, for that I respect the corporate for bending their ways to suit the local content.
If I need to be picky, I would have to say is that I expected more from them on the arrangement and decor of the counter, I expected more after looking around.

Nevertheless, it is still the most creative Star Buck in this region, I would reckon, so do enjoy the following picture while I shut up for a while.

So we just sat there for hours, with a good cup of coffee and of course, our iPad.

Dinner came oh so quickly, so what to you do but EAT.

The hotel that we stayed is linked to a shopping mall, so after looking at the options, we decided to go Italian for the night.

So when at ROME, what do the Romans do ?

Order pizza and pasta, of course.

It is definitely, not the best that we ever had, but it is average and has its own supporter, since it has been there for some years now since we first made Hong Kong a fixed destination annually, but perhaps with AT in the way now, we will see if we can manage next year.

But I don't see why not, because a child under the age of 2 years old travel for FREE, and nothing much left in this world is FREE.

So if you have too much free time, and not into visiting the Victoria Peak, like me. You can also opt to go wet market sight seeing, which is exactly what we did.

See fish hanging out of a handler, makes my day.

Listen to how they bargain in the market, makes my day.

Seeing how a modern building in the midst of old building, makes my day.

This makes my day.

This makes my day too.

This makes my day three.

But this is scary, especially if you still see blood dipping out of the poor goat head.

R.I.P, and remember you are dying for a good cause.

So after sight seeing, what do you do ?

You continue hunting for a good cafe and eat to your heart content.

Look to the right of the entrance and you will see Mr. Bill Cinton aka THE One that got BLOWN away, from the white house.

Apparently, when he was in Hong Kong, he actually ate there too, and if a place is good enough for the president of United State of America, it must be good enough for me too.

However, if you stared at the roasted goose long enough, they will start talking to you, and I swear that they spoke to me.

It was saying something along the line of "Come EAT me, EAT me, Come".

So we marched on and order ourselves each a good bowl of goose noodle.

Doesn't it look good, and I can ensure you, no one does goose justice better than the Hong Kongers.

However, if Bill Cinton was here, where did he sit at, I wonder.

So after a meal, what better way to walk it off with shopping in a super market and we came across this.

If you have no clue, this is called "Steel Balls" loosely translated and it is very popular in Taiwan, and I didn't know that Hong Konger are a fan too.

Remember what I said about mahjong being the favourite past time for Hong Konger, you can conveniently find a mahjong house in almost any street.

So on the last day in Hong Kong, how can you leave the country without visiting a local cafe.

It is relatively cheap, like in Singapore however you get lots more selection and I assured you that it will taste much better than those proclaimed Hong Kong eateries in Singapore, any time, any day.

See the menu.

See the coffee and iced lemon tea.

See the butter bun.

See the noodles.

So after breakfast, we headed off to the airport, and did I tell you that Missy prefer to take the public bus rather than the taxi... and its EVERY TIME.

Its does not end there, once in the airport, be quick to make sure you check in and clear passport control ASAP.

Why, cos there is more food inside.

This is one of our must visit joint, even if we have lounge access or not.

Look at what you can get yourself.

Still not convinced.

More proof required.

For the above are reasons why we love visiting Hong Kong more than any other places.

We been toying with the idea where to retire and although, we look Europe for its culture and heritage, but food in Asia is of no close comparison to any where else in this world.

P.S. Will try to blog more often when Asher Tan (AT) settled down proper and is a happy baby.

Yours truly,
IT
